Soroptimist International (SI) Fiji launched its ninth branch.

The new branch, Soroptimist International Sugar City Fiji is led by president, Balavu Tora.

It consists of women representatives who are specialists in their respective fields.

Ms Tora and the other 31 members were inducted by the Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Local Government, Housing and Community Development, Premila Kumar, project manager and the president for Soroptimist International Ba, Dr Maria Doton and other members.

In her new role as president of the newly-established branch, Ms Tora said the group was looking forward to the many projects that would be carried out this year.

“We were not chartered, but as of now we are and we proved it to the SI team,” she said.

“Our main portfolio is education from childhood to tertiary and health - we will go in line with the international body.

“We are also looking into empowering young women and girls, educating them on their health and wellness.

“All our members are succeeding in their own specialties and because of this I know we will succeed.”

SI Ba president, Dr Maria Doton, said the women had completed one year of observation enabling them to learn and to be confirmed coming into the international group.

Minister Kumar commended the organisation supporting women and girls around the country for many years.

“Organizations such as the Soroptimist International provide a powerful platform to improve the lives of women and girls through enabling opportunities,” she said.

The launch was held at the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel in Lautoka last Saturday
