The Savusavu Town Council is waiting for Government to gazette parking areas in town.

Once this is done, then the council will be able to install more digital parking meters.

The first lot were installed in Labasa Town during the first week of September this year.

The council received four digital parking meters during the same period, and they can’t install it without having the parking areas gazette.

This means all this time no one has been paying money to the council for parking their vehicles in Savusavu Town.

Council special administrator Doreen Robinson said she was aware of this, and the council was waiting to receive approval.

“Labasa Town Council had the areas gazetted and that is why they have parking meters,” Ms Robinson said.

“For Savusavu Town Council, we are waiting for gazette to do be done. We can’t install the digital parking meters now.”

She said the council was losing revenue.

For so many years motorists have been parking for free and sometimes the town gets congested.

The idea of installing digital parking meters was from the previous government and it was officially commissioned by the Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa.
