Toxicology reports have confirmed that no illicit substances or methanol were found in the ingredients or the cocktail served to the seven guests who fell ill at the Warwick Fiji Resort and Spa on the Coral Coast last Saturday.

Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka confirmed the test results in a press conference last night as investigations by the Ministry of Health and Police continue.

The seven guests, all women, who fell ill after drinking Pina Colada from the restaurant were four Australians, an American, two foreigners residing locally ended at the Aspen Medical Hospital in Lautoka on Sunday.

They were presented in hospital with nausea, vomiting and neurological symptoms after consuming the cocktail on Saturday.

“We are pleased to report the findings of the toxicology report and also of the testing ingredients of the drinks served at the Warwick Fiji last weekend,” Mr Gavoka said.

“I can confirm that no elusive substances or methanol were found in the ingredients or the drink samples,” he said.

“We are also pleased to inform you that the affected tourists and the locals have been now been discharged from medical care, fully recovered.

“This is of significant relief and we are grateful for the swift medical attention and care provided to the tourists affected by this incident.”

He said the findings that there was no evidence of alcohol poisoning were great news for Fiji, especially for the tourism industry.

“The findings bring much needed reassurance the global community and all travellers. The health and well-being of our visitors is our top priority.”
