A 25-year-old trainee teacher accused of sexually assaulting two male students will remain in custody. This was the order by Resident Magistrate Supreena Naidu after hearing the matter at the Nausori Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

In March, the accused allegedly sexually assaulted two students, one aged 10–14 and the other 17- years -old.

He is charged with one count of sexual assault and three counts of rape.

Magistrate Naidu ordered the defence lawyer to submit a formal bail application, which would be heard in the next court hearing because of the serious nature of the offence.

Police prosecutor Inspector Firoj Khan objected to bail, saying the complainants lived in the same location as the accused, and that was a risk.

Inspector Khan said the offence was an indictable one that should be dealt with at the High Court. However, the defense lawyer said the accused was a first-time offender and would not have any issues with absconding bail.

In response, Inspector Khan asked the court to give them until Thursday to process the information, as they had only served partial disclosures.

They will also make a formal application to transfer this case to the High Court, where he suggested hearing the bail application ruling. The case was adjourned to March 28.
