Quick action by National Fire Authority (NAF) officers helped a truck driver on avoid sustaining serious injuries after the vehicle caught fire while he was still driving it.

It is understood the truck driver was on his way to Tavua to collect garbage. It is yet to be determined how he managed to escape from the truck engulfed in flames.

How firefighters responded

NFA Chief executive officer Puamau Sowane said a call was received at the Tavua Fire station at 6.45 am.

“Brigade immediately responded with one appliance and four duty officers. Upon arrival found Toyota Reg No.CO 031 truck engine compartment was fully engulfed in flames. Fire officers immediately established one delivery from tank supply to stop the fire from further spreading,” he said.

NFA officers managed to contain the fire and further extinguished the hot spots.

“The truck belongs to Mr Sunil Gupta who was on his way to Tavua Town Council to collect rubbish. There were no injuries,” he said.

He said investigations would be carried out to determine the cause of the fire.

Council chief executive officer Sailosi Sawana confirmed the truck was owned by a private company.

“We hire their trucks to assist with garbage collection, the truck was on its way to Tavua, this is the first incident,” he said.
