The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (FTRC) has defended its work against critics who say public hearings are “digging up old wounds”.

The commission says truth-telling is essential for healing.

FTRC Commissioner Sekove Naqiolevu responded to public criticism during a media briefing at the Suva Civic Centre today.

“Digging up old wounds, that is part of the work we need to do, not necessarily digging the wound, but listening to the story of the people,” Mr Naqiolevu said.

“It’s truth-telling. They come before us to explain what impact the coups had on them, and that's very important in our legislation.”

The commission was established under the FTRC Act 2024 to address trauma from Fiji’s 1987, 2000, and 2006 political upheavals.

Commissioner Rachna Nath acknowledged not everyone was ready to come forward.

“We recognise that as much as we want many people to engage with the process, we know that not everyone is ready, and that this is a voluntary process,” Ms Nath said.

“When you are ready, as you are ready, please engage with us.”

She said the process allows survivors to help shape what reconciliation and healing looks like for the nation.

“This is a chance to talk about something that everyone needs to hear and help shape the recommendations that go into our report,” Ms Nath said.

Commissioner Rajendra Dass pointed to the testimony from former Minister Rajesh Singh as proof the process works.

“That has helped him heal, and that is the first step towards healing, is to speak about your trauma openly and freely,” Mr Dass said.

The Commission will submit its final report to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu in February 2027.
