Tsunami Watch for Fiji Cancelled

The Fiji National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has advised that all coastal and marine activities should remain suspended until an official “All Clear” message is issued.

The tsunami watch issued for Fiji following a powerful undersea earthquake near Russia has been officially cancelled.

According to the Mineral Resources Department’s Seismology Unit, tsunami waves generated by the magnitude 8.7 earthquake have safely passed Fiji.

The quake struck at 11:24:50am (Fiji Time) on Wednesday and was located 104 kilometres east-southeast of Kamchatka Krai, Russia.

Authorities confirmed that as of 10:15pm, there is no longer a tsunami threat to the Fiji region.

Despite the cancellation, the public is urged to remain cautious.
