Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu did not mince his words yesterday when he called on officers to be more proactive and transparent in their work.

Hundreds of police officers gathered at the World Harvest Centre Church in Newtown, Nasinu for their Quarterly Church Parade service.

Mr Tudravu's call follows continuous criticism from members of the public over national policing.

"We are being labelled corrupt, our work is compromised and that these investigations must be handled by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF)," Mr Tudravu said.

"But all of these are coming because we are not doing our job right."

Mr Tudravu said there was always light at the end of the tunnel despite the challenges and hurdles faced in life.

He challenged the officers, asking who they thought would bring that light and drive the change needed in their homes and in the nation.

Focus on the strategic direction that we are heading into now. I’m trying my best with the assistance of chief officers to stabilise the organisation and provide an environment for growth.

"Do you want another Commissioner to come in and change the direction, or do you want to bring someone from outside?” he questioned.

“O ni sa rogoca tiko na vosa ni Kalou, ko ni lako yani i tuba, o cei ena qai kauta mai na veisau oqo (You are hearing the word of God and going out there, but who will bring the changes?),” he said.

Mr Tudravu cautioned officers to focus on their work and maintain loyalty to their duties and families.

“Focus on the strategic direction that we are heading into now. I’m trying my best with the assistance of chief officers to stabilise the organisation and provide an environment for growth,” he said.

“Everything that we do, the result is to win the trust of members of the public.”

Mr Tudravu said although the institution was not perfect, officers were still encouraged to remain loyal and align themselves with the policies, rules and regulations of the organisation.

“Don’t be discouraged by the kinds of comments made — remain focused on the strategic direction we are heading,” he said.

“Maroroya na tabani Ovisa, maroroya na kenai rogorogo (Protect the institution and its legacy).

We are being labelled corrupt, our work is compromised and that these investigations must be handled by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). But all of these are coming because we are not doing our job right."

“Avoid self-inflicted injuries which bring negative public attention back to us.”

Mr Tudravu called for good and honest conduct from officers after incidents which brought Police into disrepute, including abuse of office.

This includes the allegations of officers being involved in illicit drug trade, thefts, rapes and marital affairs.

Police church service

Meanwhile, family members also attended the service alongside officers yesterday.

Mr Tudravu thanked the president of the Christian Mission Fellowship International, Reverend Suliasi Kurulo, for hosting the service.

A similar message was delivered during the sermon by Reverend Kurulo, who cautioned the officers to be aware that how things are often viewed would determine who they become, urging them to walk by faith and remain strong in completing their assignment to serve.
