Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu has warned police officers to abide by the law or face the consequences of engaging in criminal activities.

Mr Tudravu made this statement in relation to several police officers from the Valelevu Police Station who allegedly kidnapped, assaulted, and demanded $15,000 from a businessman at Dabea Lane, Valelevu.

This is not the first time police officers have come under scrutiny for their involvement in illegal activities, adding to the decline in public trust in the disciplinary institution.

"My warning to our police officers is loud and clear -if they continue not to conform with the processes and discipline of the organisation, then this police force is not for them," he told this masthead yesterday.

"If any police officer is found guilty of illegal activities, then we need to remove them from the organisation."

Mr Tudravu said it was encouraging to note that the majority of police officers were working towards the professionalism of the organisation.

"Our main intention is to gain the trust and confidence of the public," he said.

"But there are a few who decide otherwise. If allegations against them are substantiated by evidence, then we will remove them from the organisation."

Mr Tudravu said he would comment further on the incident once investigations were concluded.

"I cannot comment now because everything is under investigation. I will be briefed further by the investigation team, then I can clarify at that time."
