Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu says the Fiji Police Force is reviewing training at the Police Academy to ensure recruits are better prepared to uphold discipline and professionalism throughout their careers.
Speaking after concerns were raised about police officers making headlines for criminal activities, Mr Tudravu stressed that the academy plays a critical role in shaping the conduct of officers from the beginning of their service.
He said a police officer’s journey starts at the academy, where FPF values and standards are taught – these should guide them throughout their careers.

Mr Tudravu said his recent remarks that the academy should not be a place for “breeding criminals” were directed at ensuring that recruits receive proper training and discipline before entering the force.
He said there were areas within the academy that required changes, including curriculum reviews and the introduction of new training programmes to meet modern policing demands.
“There needs to be some reshuffles that need to be done. There needs to be some introduction of other curriculum needed to meet the demands that are out there,” he said.
Mr Tudravu said recruits who are not properly trained and disciplined may become vulnerable to adopting negative behaviours they encounter in the field.
He said officers must continue to follow the principles and standards taught at the academy throughout their service.
The Police Commissioner said strengthening training and discipline at the academy would help build a professional police force capable of meeting the expectations of the public.
