Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu has urged Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School student leaders to make wise choices for their future.
Officiating at the school’s prefects’ investiture ceremony yesterday, Mr Tudravu used the platform as an opportunity to inspire and empower students as they navigate their educational journey.
“In the past 10 to 15 years, I have sadly seen children caught up in the cycle of crime. Drugs, sexual offences, assault, burglary, and aggravated robbery; offences usually associated with adults are now infiltrating the younger generation,” Commissioner Tudravu said.

“Many questions are being asked and fingers pointing in all directions. From what we have seen from the investigation side of things, it’s down to poor choices,” he said.
Commissioner Tudravu also cautioned the students about the dangers of illicit drugs.
“I plead with you to choose life in its beautiful and precious form and not one that is dark and depressing, fueled by an addiction to drugs.
“I know it can be done, and it goes back to you and your choices. When you say yes to drugs, you risk your health and risk a future that is hindered by progress when you have a police record.”
The commissioner further reminded parents and guardians of their important role in their child’s educational well-being.
“Don’t be too defensive, re-examine your role as a parent or guardian and be honest with yourself,” he said.
“We are too often blaming teachers, the education system, society, or police when a child is in the wrong, but fail to acknowledge our own shortfall in this area.
“Humility in accepting responsibility will have a positive influence on your children as they understand the importance of consequences not only to others but to one’s self.
“Please continue to support their choices in education and life, and encourage dialogue,” he added.
He concluded by congratulating the newly appointed prefects and team leaders, as well as those receiving prizes for their achievements during the 2024 academic year.
Mr Tudravu also congratulated year 13 students Wame Vosayaco for his appointment as head boy and Siya Maharaj for her appointment as head girl.
