In a significant development for chiefs and Fiji's traditional leadership, two paramount chiefs have been elected as new vice-chairpersons of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC).

Ratu Suliano Matanitobua and Tui Nayau, Ratu Tevita illuilakeba, were elected to the positions on Wednesday; marking a pivotal step in the revival and strengthening of Fiji's chiefly institution.

The appointments come amid renewed national focus on indigenous leadership and the management of natural resources across Fiji's 14 provinces.

Ratu Suliano, in an interview with this masthead, emphasised unity and collaboration among the chiefs as critical to moving forward.

When asked about his stance on the ownership of these resources, he was unequivocal.

"Yes, I fully support (the sentiments shared). I commend (them). It will help not only the province of Namosi, but also the 14 provinces."

He stressed the importance of unity among Fiji's traditional leaders, saying: "My view is for us, the chiefs, to be one, to be united. Then we can achieve our mission."

The reconstitution of the GCC Complex and the selection of its leadership are being closely watched across Fiji as communities look to traditional institutions for guidance on critical issues such as land rights, resource ownership, and cultural preservation.

Ratu Tevita, commonly known as Roko illui, has yet to release a public statement, but the vice-chairs are expected to play key roles in shaping the GCC's direction in the coming months.

The GCC, once a powerful independent advisory body to Government on matters relating to iTaukei, was disbanded in 2012 by former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.
