Tui Nawaka, Ratu Joeli Bulu Derenalagi calls on his people to begin the New Year with spiritual renewal through fasting and family prayer.

While visiting New Zealand, Ratu Joeli delivered his message to families of the 12 tribes (yavusa) on New Year’s eve.

He called on his people to reflect on past achievements and move forward with a strong spiritual foundation.

“This is my message to all those living in Australia, New Zealand, America, those serving in the British Army, and all who live in other parts of the world,” Ratu Joeli said.

“I thank God for allowing us to reach 2026. Let us begin this year with family time prayer. Let us strengthen this and build our families on the word of God.

“Let us return to God and change our lives. If we humble ourselves, repent and return to God, God will heal our land. Let us sacrifice through fasting, prayer, and by reading and meditating on the word of God.”

The retired head teacher said the two main topic he consistently reminded his subjects during traditional meetings — “Serving God and education”.

“These are the two important priorities for Nawaka - to serve God diligently and, secondly, for every villager to receive good education and thrive academically,” he said.

Nawaka College

Ratu Joeli said the new Nawaka College was scheduled to open later this month.

“We have witnessed the construction of the new Nawaka College, which will open on January 28,” he said.

“We need the support of the turaga ni yavusa, turaga ni mataqali and every villagers so that our school is well established.

He added that all funds contributed would go into the vanua account for the construction and development of the school.

Ratu Joeli have also informed the Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, who will officiate at the opening.

He urged the natives of Nawaka to use their resources wisely and to utilise their land to provide housing for family members, particularly mothers.
