Carried high on the shoulders of warriors, draped in sacred 'masi', and surrounded by chants of allegiance, Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara was yesterday installed as 'Tui Nayau'-reviving a chiefly title vacant for 21 years and once held by his late father, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.
The day started with a dawn church service in Narocivo Village, where Methodist Church president Reverend Semisi Turagavou said:
"No matter how fierce the battles the anointing will protect you. It will cover you."

"This chiefly title is not just an honour-it is a duty," Ratu Tevita said, urging unity and compassion across the 'vanua o Lau'.
Later, in a formal handover ceremony, he was taken back to Lakeba where traditional welcome rituals continued into the night.
For many, this was more than atraditional installation. It marked a moment of national pride, reconnection, and cultural revival.
Elders of Nayau expressed deep satisfaction: "The chief has returned. The 'vanua' is whole again."
