The Province of Naitasiri is preparing to bid farewell to one of its most prominent paramount chiefs, Turaga na Qaranivalu, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, on Friday.

A family member confirmed to the Fiji Sun that the funeral service is scheduled for 10am at the Adi Arieta Memorial Church in Navuso Village.

Burial

The burial will take place at the chiefly burial grounds (Sautabu), known as Natukilagi, a site traditionally built by the mataisau (craftsmen).

In the lead-up to the funeral, traditional protocols would be strictly observed.

On Wednesday, movement within the area will be restricted, with traditional warriors (bati) assigned to monitor and enforce protocols.

The funeral is expected to draw a large number of attendees, including members of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC), Ro Teimumu Kepa, and several Government ministers.

Ratu Inoke died at the age of 78 at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva on Sunday, April 13. He had been the Qaranivalu since 1997.

Ratu Inoke was a former politician and a key figure during a tumultuous period in Fiji’s political history.
