Turmeric sets $25m record

Turmeric export earnings have impressed a record $25.2 million yield in 2024, the highest the last 12 years, says Principal Agricultural Officer (PAO) North, Sujendra Prasad.
Mr Prasad revealed this at the Public Service celebration at Lions Park, Labasa on Friday.
Mr Prasad said while a lot of people may be accustomed to different crops such as sugarcane, kava, dalo; turmeric has become a lucrative crop.

He encouraged people to turn to turmeric farming because market was now open.
Mr Prasad said they would continue to assist new turmeric farmers who are keen to expand to exporting overseas.
Labasa market vendor Amrika Prasad, said turmeric had a lot of potential.
"Farmers need to diversify their income source instead of monocropping or engaging in just one crop production," he said.
"Diversification remains essential for financial sustainability in farming," Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Tomasi Tunabuna, said.
Mr Tunabuna said mushroom farming is another crop that is gaining interest.
The Ministry of Agriculture last year trained villagers of Nacula in Labasa, in ways to engage in mushroom farming.
They were provided with a greenhouse and some sample of mushrooms for trial purposes.
