Two Dead In West Road Accidents

When I arrived at the scene, I was shocked to see his body covered up. Police had not allowed us to touch his body. He left behind two young children. This is so sad.

Tomasi Waimuka only wished to see his son, Aporosa Momo alive at the roadside in Drasa Avenue, Lautoka early Saturday morning.

His son, Momo was believed to be a hit and run victim.

Director Traffic Senior Super-intendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana said Momo, 26, was found by a passerby who rushed him to the Lautoka Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Mr Waimuka of Nasowata Settlement in Navutu, Lautoka, said they had returned from a funeral on Friday and his son had told him later in the night that he was going back to the relative’s place.

“Few hours later, I was woken up by the knocking on the door. It was two of my nephews who came and told me that my son was involved in a hit and run accident, and he was badly injured. I had only wished to see him alive with just a minor injury,” he said.

“When I arrived at the scene, I was shocked to see his body covered up. Police had not allowed us to touch his body. He left behind two young children. This is so sad.

“I miss my son. Every function that takes place in this settlement, he sacrificed to help in whatever way he could.

Mr Waimuka said his son played in a rugby league team in Lautoka.

SSP Divuana said traffic investigators had started an investigation.

Another road accident

SSP Divuana said another accident occurred after midnight on Friday which led to the death of a Nadi businessman, Ronesh Chand, 38.

Police said it was alleged that Mr Chand, while driving along Barara Flat heading towards Nadi, lost control of his vehicle and veered-off the road.

He was travelling with three others. They were rushed to the Lautoka Hospital where Mr Chand later died. Two of the three passengers remained in stable conditions while the third passenger was dis-charged, said SSP Divuana.

This masthead visited the family in Votualevu and they wished not to speak with the media.

SSP Divuana says the road death toll currently stands at 50 compared to 71 for the same period last year.
