Two Men In Remand, Face Raft Of Charges

Two men accused of pelting a Police vehicle with stones appeared at the Nadi Magistrates Court yesterday and were remanded in custody at the Natabua Corrections Facility.
Sachin Deo Verma, 44, a self-employed man of VM Pillay Road, and Epi Batirerega, 53, a security officer of Tavakubu Housing, appeared before Magistrate Peni Dalituicama yesterday.
Verma has been charged with three counts of damaging property, two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm, two counts of criminal intimidation and one count of kidnapping.

The incidents happened on February 10 in Nadi.
Police prosecutor Corporal Ana Mataniwai objected to bail.
“There are a few other suspects are at large and yet to be arrested,” she said. “The matter is of national and public interest.”
Defence lawyer Mosese Raratabu told the court that his clients would adhere to strict bail conditions.
The case will be called on February 28.
