Ramadan will be observed differently this year for Sunni Muslim South Pacific headquarters in Labasa.
The president of the Vanua Levu Muslim League, Alhaj Bashir Khan, said this year they will give Zakat (a form of almsgiving , seen as a religious duty for all Muslims who meet the necessary criteria of wealth) twice as opposed to the usual one time.
“This year Ramadan will be more special as we give to the poor twice,” Mr Khan said.
“Many have suffered at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Mr Khan said.
“We will be giving Zakat this Friday and before the sighting of the new moon, that is before the end of the fasting period.
“This is just to help those families prepare during their Ramadan fasting and celebration.”
Chief Priest of the Vanua Levu Muslim League Jame Mosque Molana Agher Ali, is originally from Uttar Pradesh in India, and is glad to be in Fiji.
Chief Priest Ali said that despite the different countries, the observation for the sacred month was similar.
“Fiji is a beautiful country and is blessed with no community transmission of COVID-19,” he said.
“We will pray for more peace and love for everyone,” he said.
Sunni Muslim South Pacific was established in 1984 and comes under the Vanua Levu Muslim League.
