Two-Year-Old Youngest Victim of Sexual Offences

A two-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl were youngest victims of serious sexual offences in 2023 while the youngest accused person was a 13-year-old boy.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) data released recently relates to the number of formal indictments (Information) filed in the High Courts of Fiji by the DPP.
This from the period of January 1 to December 31, 2023.

The ODPP data reveals that 299 people were charged with a total of 743 counts of serious sexual offences as of December 31, 2023.
Of the 299 accused persons one was female, 31 were juveniles and four were police officers, the ODPP said.
Stop sexual abuse
There were 282 victims of whom 175 were under 18.
Of the 282 victims, 266 were female and 16 were male victims.
There were 154 offences that occurred in
domestic relationships or where the accused was known to the victims.
The youngest accused person was a 13-year-old boy while the youngest victims were a two-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl.
About 47 cases were withdrawn after discontinuances (Nolle Prosequi) were filed in 2023.
