A Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine (TCV) mass vaccination campaign was launched yesterday in Labasa.

The mass administration of this vaccine is the first for Fiji.

Ministry for Health and Medical Services with Typhoid in Fiji (Ty-FIVE) consortium partners will be spearheading the vaccination drive.

The consortium includes International Vaccine Institute in Seoul, South Korea, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and the University of Melbourne from Australia.

The Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Atonio Lalabalavu while officiating at the launch, said typhoid was one of the three priority communicable diseases in Fiji.

Statistically, there are 40 reported cases of typhoid for the Northern Division and 162 for the whole country for this year so far, he said.

Last year in the North, there were 78 typhoid cases with one death and four severe cases.
