The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) has commended the work of the Fijian Government towards enhancing Fiji’s Early Warning System (EWS).
The UNDRR head of the Pacific sub-regional office, Gabrielle Emery, said Fiji was one of the eight countries in the Pacific to have reported on their multi-hazard EWS through the Sendai Framework monitor last year.
“And while this is good progress, there is still more work to strengthen the quality of the early warning systems,” she said yesterday.

“This means we cannot rely on technology alone, we need the requisite capacity built in the agencies and the communities, we need strong governance structures that bring together the relevant agencies from across government to coordinate and share information.”
The UNDRR has calculated that investing $800million in EWS in developing countries would avoid losses of between three to $16billion per year.
