Fiji Teachers Union general secretary Muniappa Gounder is urging school managements to implement spot checks as part of a comprehensive strategy to address illicit drug use among students.

He emphasised the importance of vigilance, encouraging parents to take an active role in monitoring what their children bring to school.

He was responding to a case where primary school students were referred to Police last week for allegedly smoking marijuana.

“Parents need to check what their children are taking to school,” Mr Gounder said.

“Spot checks should be conducted regularly, to ensure that everything and everyone is scrutinised. This approach would identify prohibited items and reinforce a culture where students understand the consequences of bringing such items to school.”

He expressed concern over the growing number of drug-related incidents, stating, “There are so many cases, yet nothing significant is being done. Spot checks are crucial in this fight.”

He also called for increased involvement from local law enforcement to raise awareness within schools.

“Disciplined forces should actively patrol schools to educate students about the dangers of drug use,” he said.

“Drug awareness cannot be limited to just one week; it must be a continuous effort.”

Highlighting the importance of education, Mr Gounder stressed that informing children about the harmful effects of drugs should be top priority for schools and communities alike.
