Six units within the Savusavu hospital morgue are out of order.

This has forced a reduced capacity to three bodies only at the morgue since last week.

Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Industries president Avikash Pillay who is also the chairperson of Savusavu Sub-divisional Hospital Board of Visitors confirmed this yesterday.

He said when the morgue was full, relatives of the deceased arrange transport at their own cost to Labasa Hospital mortuary.

“The estimated cost of one return trip from Savusavu to Labasa is around $200 and imagine relatives have to fork out another $200 to transport the casket to the funeral venue,” Mr Pillay said.

When asked when the replacement will be done or when the machines will be fixed, he said they were waiting to meet with the hospital stakeholders this Thursday to discuss about the lack of facilities.

The Ministry of Health is expected to issue a statement on the issue today.
