Fiji National University (FNU) student, Matelita Niulala was praised for her integrity and resolute character after she returned a wallet she found in a taxi in Lautoka on the weekend.

Ms Niulala, 19, a second-year student at Natabua Campus found the wallet belonging to a Kiniviliame Naceba and returned it.

With identification cards inside the wallet, she searched for the name of the owner on Facebook Messenger, and contacted Mr Naceba.

He is a Fiji Airways employee and praised the young woman’s integrity but also her parents for instilling good values.

“I recognise the good values that have been instilled in her by her parents,” he said.

Mr Naceba said last Monday he returned with his children from shopping and after watching a movie when he realised that he had lost his wallet.

“I retraced my steps and all I could remember was placing it back in its usual spot.

“When I received my wallet, nothing was missing. I encouraged her to never lose her honesty and integrity, as these are fast becoming a rare commodity to find in our society these days,” Mr Naceba said.

Ms Niulala said despite being tempted to use the money inside the wallet, her conscience kept reminding her that it was the wrong thing to do.

“I was with my group of friends when I found the wallet. I tried to find a way to return it to the owner.”
