The Ministry of Fisheries is worried about illegal fishing in Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The ministry will collaborate with the crew of the U.S Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Harriet Lane to address this problem effectively.

Commanding officer Nicole Tesoniero said the Coast Guard’s statutory missions included counter-drug activities, along with other important tasks.

Even though their current focus is on fisheries, counter-drug efforts remain a crucial aspect of their operations. The fisheries industry plays a key role in providing food and income in the Pacific region.

Therefore, the United States and Pacific Island countries prioritise the protection of this vital renewable resource. Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in the Pacific has significant global consequences.
