Fiji’s biggest water project has been credited as a visionary initiative of the FijiFirst government.

The Viria Water Project in Naitasiri is expected to benefit thousands of Fijians within the greater Suva area with extended water supply as far as Pacific Harbour in Serua and Korovou, Tailevu.

Opposition Member of Parliament Jone Usamate said the visionary foresight of the FijiFirst government would benefit people with uninterrupted water supply.

“This project bears testimony to the leadership of Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama and FijiFirst to build a better Fiji for all, through innovative financing, strategic thinking and excellence in collaboration,” Mr Usamate said

“A big vinaka vakalevu to Water Authority of Fiji for its execution. It is intensely satisfying for me as Minister for Infrastructure from 2018 to 2022, to see that the $300million Phase 1 of Viria Water Project, a FijiFirst initiative is almost complete.”

Mr Usamate said the project would add an additional 40 million litres of water to the network per day.

It would bring the total supply to 204 million litres per day, he said.

Mr Usamate said this would end the current two million-litre gap between supply and demand and provide a steady water supply to areas experiencing sparse supply.

He said the project was a major investment in the future of Fiji and would have a significant impact on the lives of the people of Suva and surrounding areas.

Mr Usamate said the project would increase water availability.

“The project will add an additional 40 million litres of water to the network daily, to help meet the growing demand for water in the Suva and greater Suva area, and an addition of an extra 40 million litres in the future,” he said.

The project, expected to improve water pressure and reduce water cuts, is scheduled to be commissioned next month.
