Schoolteacher Rishi Ram knows the value of time and he makes every moment of it count, working hard for his family.
Mr Ram has 28 years of teaching experience in remote and rural schools, and with it comes educational resource challenges that have moulded him into a problem solver.
The current headteacher of Galoa Island Primary School in Bua grew up in a farming family, and agriculture has always been his passion.

“Even though I am a school teacher, I continued to farm vegetables and rice with the knowledge I had learned from my father while working with him on the farm,” Mr Ram said.
In 2019, he became Fiji’s highest yielding rice farmer and produced 60 tonnes of rice. He kept three tonnes of rice seeds for this year and sold the remaining 57 tonnes to Fiji Rice Limited.
Mr Ram said this was possible with government assistance through the machinery hired at a subsidized rate.
His family also plants vegetables, rear goats and fishing.

“I love working hard and always strive to get full cooperation from my family, by working alone I could not have achieved all this,” he said.
His advice: “What you become depends on how wise you use your time. Some people end up being beggars while some become millionaires.”
