Residents and community leaders living near the Nakasi cremation site are calling for regular police patrols following repeated acts of vandalism in the area.
Committee member Davendra Kawel said the latest incident involved intruders cutting and stealing metal grills, doors and dogo (mangrove wood) used for cremations, while also damaging roofing materials.
“We reported it to the police and they took my statement, but nothing has been done,” Mr Kawel said.

He claimed the cremation site had become a gathering place for people who entered the grounds to smoke, consume alcohol and possibly use drugs.
“We see empty beer cans and bottles in the area. It is an eyesore,” he said.
Mr Kawel estimated the damage at about $3000.
Residents have already begun repairing the facility.
Mr Kawel said no suspects had been identified. However, the community plans to discuss additional security measures, including surveillance and monitoring of the area.
“We have to get everything repaired and see if we can organise security or something similar,” he said.
Mr Kawel, who has been involved with the cremation ground for the past five years, said the site hosts only two or three funerals each month, making it important to maintain the area with respect and dignity.
He appealed to young people to respect the cremation ground and refrain from damaging property.
“We urge police to increase patrols in the area. We see occasional visits, but there needs to be more monitoring to prevent vandalism and unlawful activities,” he said.
