Vanua o Lalagavesi Celebrates Ratu Naiqama’s Appointment
The ceremony involved a yaqona vakaturaga ceremony, the presentation of tabua (whale’s tooth) and traditional gifts, followed by a feast and a meke performance.

The vanua o Lalagavesi gathered in large numbers in Somosomo Village, Taveuni yesterday to celebrate the appointment of their paramount chief, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, as the President of Fiji on November 12, 2024.
The celebration included a traditional vakasenuqanuqa ceremony, which is reserved for individuals who have achieved significant milestones, such as victory in war or contributions that bring pride to the vanua.
The ceremony involved a yaqona vakaturaga ceremony, the presentation of tabua (whale’s tooth) and traditional gifts, followed by a feast and a meke performance.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, along with Cabinet Ministers, including Minister for Lands Filimoni Vosarogo and Minister for Health Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, attended the event to show their support.
Mr Rabuka, a son of Cakaudrove, expressed his pride in attending the event to honour His Excellency, the President, and to celebrate his new role as Head of State.
Addressing those in attendance, Ratu Naiqama urged the vanua to stand united for the betterment of its people.
Ratu Naiqama also highlighted the importance of addressing pressing social issues such as the spread of HIV/AIDS and drug trafficking.
