“As a dietitian, I’ve been visiting schools and communities conducting awareness and health talk, but speaking to thousands of people on that stage will be a new experience for me,” Miss Varuru said.
She hopes to raise awareness on food security and make a positive impact in communities.
“I chose this topic because majority of people in Fiji, including the North are food insecure.
“We don’t have access to safe nutritious and sufficient food because of different financial backgrounds, unavailability of resources, fluctuations in market prices, climate change affecting agricultural sectors and production and highly dependence on imported foods, thus people opt for quantity over quality.
“To be food secure, we need to practice sustainable agriculture, starting at home by having backyard gardens, growing our own food and choosing locally produced foods values,” she said.
She has a twin sister and a younger brother.
Her mother is a teacher at Wairiki Kindergarten, Labasa and her father works at the Water Authority of Fiji.
