Community leaders in Vaturova, Cakaudrove say traditional disciplinary systems have weakened, prompting calls for greater village authority and the return of corporal punishment.

Villagers have called for the return of corporal punishment in rural communities.

The call was made during a Constitution Review Commission consultation at the Korotasere Village Hall yesterday, where community representatives said traditional methods of discipline once played an important role in maintaining respect and order within villages.

Tui Vaturova Ratu Emosi Veidre Rokotuibua told commissioners that many parents and community leaders now felt powerless in dealing with growing disrespect among young people.

“In the old days, discipline was strict, and children understood respect,” he said.

“Today, many parents and community leaders feel powerless because the systems that once kept order are no longer there.”

Community members said rural areas should be given greater authority to enforce discipline in line with traditional leadership and cultural practices.

“We are not asking for violence,” Mr Rokotuibua said.

“We are asking for a system that restores respect, responsibility and accountability in our villages.”

The consultation in Cakaudrove formed part of the nationwide constitutional review process, allowing communities to raise concerns and recommendations on issues affecting their daily lives.
