Work has officially begun on the $1 million Veikoba Subdivision in Nasinu — a major step in the Government’s drive to expand affordable housing opportunities for Fijian families.
Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa today led the groundbreaking ceremony, describing the project as “a tangible step” toward the vision of providing safe, secure, and affordable homes for all.
“The Veikoba Subdivision is another tangible step toward that goal. It will create opportunities for families to own their first home while supporting the continued growth of Nasinu as one of Fiji’s key urban centres,” Mr Nalumisa said.

“When we invest in housing, we invest in our people — their dignity, wellbeing, and future. Every home built represents stability for a family, a safe place for children to grow, and an anchor for community development.”

The development will provide 640 serviced residential lots designed for single-storey row homes, with options for two- and three-bedroom houses. Each lot will have access to key infrastructure — including roads, electricity, and clean water — to create a modern and connected community.
Mr Nalumisa thanked key partners — including the Water Authority of Fiji, Fiji Roads Authority, Energy Fiji Limited, Nasinu Town Council, and the Ministry of Local Government — for their support in enabling the project.
He also acknowledged the landowners, the Mataqali Naulukaroa, for releasing the land for development, and the project’s contractor, China Railway First Group, for its technical expertise.
The subdivision is expected to ease housing pressure in the Suva–Nasinu corridor and create jobs for local contractors and suppliers during construction.
Housing Authority Chief Executive Officer Isikeli Navuda said the project represents more than land development — it is about building hope.
“This project is not just about land development — it’s about building communities and providing hope for families who dream of owning a home,” Mr Navuda said.
“As we break ground today, we also break new ground in our journey towards inclusive and sustainable housing development in Fiji.”
Mr Nalumisa said the Veikoba project marks a new chapter of growth and opportunity for many families.
“Together, we are building not just houses, but communities — and ultimately, a stronger Fiji,” he said.
