Vessel to boost ocean and Fiji marine conservation

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, on Friday, underscored Fiji’s commitment to advancing marine science, innovation, and environmental conservation during the commissioning of the research vessel, MV Yau Dikevi.

It is a new state-of-the-art research vessel for the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources.

At its commissioning at Novotel Lami, Mr Rabuka said the vessel would play a crucial role in enhancing the country’s understanding of its oceanic ecosystem.

Mr Rabuka described the vessel as a symbol of Fiji’s dedication to scientific progress and environmental stewardship.

“The MV Yau Dikevi marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to protect our marine environment, which is vital to Fiji’s cultural and ecological heritage,” Mr Rabuka said.

He said the was part of a broader initiative to combine scientific research with traditional knowledge.

“This is not just about marine science, it is about connecting with the lore our traditional knowledge and understanding the deep ties between our people, the land, and the seas that surround us.”

He said the vessel reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation. The vessel is expected to enhance Fiji’s marine research capabilities, PM Rabuka said.
