Herbal medicine eases COVID-19 symptoms, but does not cure it, says the Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete.
The usage of herbal medicine as a cure has been widely recommended online with several COVID-19 patients claiming to have been cured by it.
Two herbal medicines that are popular locally are Scavola (Vevedu) and red banana (Vudi damu).

“COVID-19 is caused by SARS-CoV 2 Virus. Whilst some of our herbal remedies may help alleviate some symptoms; it does not exterminate the virus,” Dr Waqainabete said.
“The natural history of the disease may be; asymptomatic, some have mild symptoms, some have moderate to severe requiring oxygen, ventilation and some unfortunately die.
“Herbal remedy does not substitute the conventional treatment that is recommended by best practices and WHO.”
