The Maururu Women’s Group has been praised for their efforts in building their village hall in Nadua, Wainunu in the province of Bua, Vanua Levu.

Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete, last week thanked the women for their hard work and the initiative to do something for the village.

He emphasised to the women of the importance of maintaining their health and fitness. He also officially opened a latrine block at Nadua.

“One latrine cost about $150, but we’re working with our multilateral partners in UNICEF while the designing was done by an American NGO (non-governmental organisation),” Dr Waqainabete said.

“The village communities build the shed in which the latrines are placed,” he said.

Group secretary Mereoni Murusiga said the women were very grateful to the minister for facilitating their request and now the village was complete with two toilets.

“The village hall project was initially handled by the women’s group and through our village nurse we requested the Health and Medical Services Ministry if they could assist us with the materials for a toilet,” Ms Murusiga said.

“They donated the toilet pan and other materials which enabled us to set up two toilets specifically for the village hall.

“We’re so grateful for the enormous assistance by the ministry and on top of that the minister came to officiate the commissioning of the latrine block,” she said.

Meanwhile, on behalf of the Minister, Roko Tui Bua, Waisake Tuisese officially opened the community latrines in Kiobo, Kubulau, Bua with materials that were donated by the ministry promoting healthy living standards in rural communities to combat diseases such as typhoid.
