The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Fiji continues to conduct Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) training in local communities in the Northern Division.

This is to better prepare the communities for future disasters.

The team was in Taveuni recently to conduct training in three communities to help them develop a Community Disaster Management Plan. The three villages of Weilagi, Vione and Lamini are part of the training held at the Lamini Village hall. Training is expected to end next week.

The Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) training was part of the Strengthening Communications and Coordination Mechanism at Sub-national Level Project funded by the Australian Aid under the Australian Humanitarian Partnership.

Co-ordinator Viliame Tuimanu said the training covered hazard, vulnerability, capacity and risk assessment, disaster history, community mapping and also community profiling to help in the formulation of their own disaster risk plan.

Petero Nasaroa of Lamini Village thanked ADRA Fiji for the training.

“We’ve experienced many cyclones recently and the training is really helpful for us to better understand disasters and ways to minimise the disaster risks,” Mr Nasaroa said.

“It focuses on disaster preparedness and we are thankful to ADRA Fiji for bringing the training right to us.”

The three communities covered in Taveuni takes the number of communities visited in Cakaudrove to seven. Fourteen communities in Cakaudrove will be covered.
