As reports of gender-based violence continue to concern communities across Fiji, the Navratri festival is being used as a platform to promote respect for women, moral courage, and unity.
Fijians have been encouraged to embrace the deeper message of Navratri, one of courage, discipline, and compassion, as nine sacred nights dedicated to Goddess Durga unfold with prayers, fasting, and vibrant cultural events.
The Swami Vivekananda College Ex-Scholars Association president, Vineel Nand said the festival was more than a spiritual observance. It is a call to action for families and communities.

“Navratri teaches us the strength and compassion of the Divine Mother,” Mr Nand said. “We must translate that devotion into daily life by showing greater respect for women in our homes and standing firmly against domestic violence.”
Mr Nand urged devotees and well-wishers to see faith as a unifying force, promoting friendship and harmony across Fiji’s multicultural society.
“Religion should build bridges, never barriers,” he said.
The association said that the Divine Feminine symbolised by goddess Durga reminds all believers, Hindu and non-Hindu alike of the power of moral courage. Mr Nand said that this message was particularly relevant at a time when reports of gender-based violence remained a concern nationwide.
As devotees' light lamps and offer prayers, the association encourages every household to reflect on how the festival’s values can inspire positive change.
“May this Navratri bless Fiji with peace, joy, prosperity and contentment,” he said.
The association’s message resonates beyond temple walls, serving as a national reminder that true devotion lies not only in rituals, but in everyday acts of respect and compassion.
