Visually-Impaired Get With White Canes, Braille Papers

Sixty white canes and more than 1000 braille papers were handed over to the Fiji Society for the Blind in Suva, yesterday.
This is part of National Disability Awards charity giveaway done by the United Blind Persons of Fiji (UBP).
United Blind Persons of Fiji office manager Rajnel Prasad said this was its major plan for the past few years to give back to the visually-impaired community.

“This has been one of our major roles. I believe that this is the first time where UBP has contributed towards the visually impaired,” Mr Prasad said.
“Funds were raised by our events, particularly from the National Disability Awards.
“This is one of the major reasons why we organised the event to contribute to our members in need,” he said.
Mr Prasad said the braille papers would help students to better their education.
“This is just the beginning, there are more devices that we are planning to import for giving assistance to these students,” he said.
Year Five visually impaired student Alumita Joji was happy to receive her new white cane.
“I would like to thank the UBP for remembering us,” she said.
School principal Sharmila Chandra thanked the organisation for the donation.
