A Police Post at Votualevu will not only make a difference but also give us a more safe and secure environment.

Votualevu advisory councillor, Saiyad Jafar Shah made the statement on Thursday.

Mr Shah has been working closely with Methodist Church leaders in Votualevu, the Namaka police and the community to tackle the issue of drugs.

Votualevu has a population of about 10,000 and there are specific areas that have been regarded as red zones.

Nearly half of the houses in the area have cameras installed in their houses due to frequent thefts and break-ins.

Last week there was a break-in at Crispy Chicken Shack restaurant at Votualevu.

“It is alleged that these criminal activities happen due to drugs,” he said.

“Those who are committing these criminal activities are not from here. Families and business owners here are living in fear. Police have alerted us that there are lot of young boys selling drugs and there have been daily arrests.”

Mr Shah and a few community members and businesses have identified the challenges that the police have in lack of police vehicles and so they have taken the initiative to buy a tent and solar lights to assist police patrolling the area.

“We really want a 24/7 police patrol in our community, the tent and solar lights are to help them.

“We are working together with police to find a land or a space to build a police post.

Divisional Police Commander West SSP Iakobo Vaisewa has confirmed that police have recently made some arrests at Votualevu and those who have been arrested are in custody and under investigation.
