Wailea Embraces Composting

Residents of Wailea Informal Settlement have begun embracing the idea of composting to manage green waste, thanks to a project with United Nations Human Settlement Programme.
Improper disposal of rubbish has been a problem in the settlement and residents took to the idea of composting when it was initiated during one of their projects.
UN-Habitat started a project which involves backyard gardening, recycling plastic bottles to be used in gardening and doing more with less.

As part of the project, local company, Landscaping Solutions Fiji provided bags of soil to many informal settlements.
Company director, Vilimoni Waqainabete, said the residents were keen to learn more about composting.
“We partnered with UN-Habitat on its COVID-19 Community Awareness and Preparedness in Informal Settlements in Fiji project, to provide our FijiGro compost and a brief workshop on composting,” he said.
“It was good because we found that residents of Wailea were keen to find out more about composting.
“I think there is a solution to some of their garbage problems. It also provides them with an organic fertiliser for their gardens.”
Naomi Masi, 47, of Wailea, said people of the settlement were keen to take up composting.
“For years, we have dealt with the problem of disposal and not having land to make gardens. This project helps all of us,” she said.
