Wainadoi Vendors Depend On Roadside Sales

Roadside vendors in Wainadoi, Navua were happy to reopen their stalls following two-months of closure due to the COV­ID-19 pandemic.

Farzana Khan, 33, who supports her family from the income she earns through her roadside stall sales, says the approval to reopen brought relief to her family.

“My husband who works as a joiner in Suva could not attend work for over two-months following the lockdown and the market closure deprived us from our source of income,” Mrs Khan said.

She added that following the reopen­ing last week a fifty percent drop in weekly income was recorded due to the border closure at Wainadoi.

Mrs Khan who also supports her parents said most of their customers were people travelling to and from Suva. But it all stopped following the lockdown.

Those visiting the containment bor­der and residents from nearby com­munities are the only hope for two out of six roadside stall owners that were given the green light to operate under COVID-19 guidelines.
