Miss Vodafone Tebara Carnival 2024, Miss Amra Mall, Beranadeta Waqavanua, dedicated her win to her parents, especially her mother, for yesterday’s Mother’s Day.

Ms Waqavanua was crowned on Saturday night at Nausori’s Syria Park. The theme for this year’s carnival is ‘Choose a healthy lifestyle’ with the slogan Combat Non-Communicable Diseases.

The 23-year-old high school teacher was emotional as she thanked everyone who stood by her in the weeklong carnival.

“I want to thank my parents, Vinaka Vakalevu ta and na (thank you dad and mum), for everything you have done for me in the past 23 years.

It has not gone unnoticed,” Ms. Waqavanua said.

“My families here and overseas, especially to Navakawau in Nasilai, Rewa.

I want to thank everyone who has helped me, because without them, I wouldn’t be standing here with the crown.

“Thank you to my sponsors for supporting me since day one and for the boys who lifted me on the bilibili (bamboo raft), which was made by my father, vinaka vakalevu (thank you dad).”

Minister for Local Government Maciu Katamotu commended the 2024 Vodafone Tebara Carnival for its campaign to combat non-communicable diseases (NCD).

“Ministry of Health data shows that we lost an estimated 5700 Fijians due to NCD’s, and now around 80 percent of deaths are caused by NCD’s in Fiji and growing,” Mr. Katamotu said.

“Take part in sports activities, do regular exercises, and choose healthy diets to combat NCD.

I urge all parents out there to practice and live a healthy lifestyle at home.

Vodafone Fiji regional chief marketing officer Rajnesh Prasad thanked the organisers, volunteers, and participants who had accomplished the milestones of the carnival throughout the week.

“Let us recognise that true beauty goes beyond the bounds of physical physical appearance.

It is about kindness, compassion, and, above all, the ability to inspire others,” Mr. Prasad said.

“Each contestant embodies these qualities, showcasing not only their elegance but also their strength and resilience.

Throughout this journey, these impressive women have demonstrated courage, determination, and a commitment to making a difference.

“They have embraced their individuality and empowered others to do the same.”
