Vodafone Tebara Carnival contestant Beranadeta Waqavanua, 23, is using the platform as an opportunity to advocate for mental health.
The Noco Secondary School teacher hopes to reach out to as many youths as possible during the weeklong carnival.
“Mental health is everybody’s business; it is thriving among our youths. It is an issue that needs everyone to lend their time and patience to assist those with mental health,” Ms Waqavanua said.

“Suicide is a real concern and a silent killer within homes and communities. I’m using this platform to advocate for youths as I believe that many youths are battling mental health challenges.
“I would like to encourage youths to choose paths aligned with their values, even in the face of societal pressures or peer influence.
“Decisions are important; individuals should stay true to themselves and make decisions based on what they know is right, not succumb to external pressure.
“When a youth is at a disadvantage in properly receiving treatment and care, that’s when they are most in need of someone they can share their story with. That is when family, school, church, community, and society come in; we need to have the patience and time to listen.”
Ms Waqavanua is concerned with the appalling number of people visiting St Giles.
Earlier this year, St Giles senior medical superintendent Dr Balram Pandit revealed they recorded an increase in the number of visits last year, 9125 compared to 6322 in 2022.
Dr Pandit added the increase in numbers included those aged 14, 15, and 16, and near adults as a result of substance abuse.
Ms Waqavanua said it was not only the Government’s job to find ways to deal with mental health, but every member of the community should work hand in hand and provide better dialogue.
Sponsored by Amras Mall, Ms Waqavanua is from Nasilai Village in Rewa.
