Forty households at Sese Settlement in Cuvu, Nadroga will benefit from a new water storage facility.

The project was commissioned by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Inia Seruiratu on Monday.

“This is part of the new package that we have formulated together with the United Nations Development Programme,” he said.

“It is one of the first of its kind in Fiji. This is what we call risk-informing development that will ensure maximum benefit to members of communities.

“Most water facilities in rural areas are usually damaged by flying debris, or even blown away when there is a disaster.

“For this water storage, we have a shed over it and of course the stand plus the steel wires and the protection wall to prevent this from being damaged.”

The project was funded by the ministry’s Self Help Programme with additional funding from the UNDP’s Governance for Resilient Development in the Pacific (Gov4Res) Project for the risk component aspect of the project.

Mr Seruiratu said Government with UNDP had contributed about $36,000 for the facility.
