Event spokesperson, William Domonatani, said the response from the public was great.
He said it was one of the many events that would be organised for the rural communities that do not have access to swimming pools.
“We had three sessions where we taught water safety skills. Of the 147 participants, a quarter was associated with the clubs, while the rest were from other sporting bodies, church groups and youth groups,” Mr Domonatani said.
“We are concerned about the recent spate of drownings and are hoping that the Water-Safety Fair will eventually help save lives and bring the drowning statistics lower.”
Participants at the Aquatic Centre were aged between five and eighteen years old.
The national drowning toll stands at 32 compared to 25 for the same period last year. Majority of the drowning victims were children where there was no adult supervision.
Meanwhile the Fiji Police Force has stressed the importance of having adult supervision when children are out swimming.
