Water disruption will not be an issue now for about 700 people in Korotari, Labasa, after the Government funded their water maintenance project.

This project was handed over to the Korotari Water Committee yesterday.

Committee president Vishwa Chand said 52 years ago, the then Government helped their forefathers build a catchment at Vanuatabu Creek, which is about 10 kilometres from his residence in Korotari.

“During that time, about 120 houses, three schools, one temple, one church, and one village benefited from this project,” Mr Chand said.

When Tropical Cyclone Yasa struck Vanua Levu in 2020, the pipes laid on Korotari River got damaged.

Assistant Minister of Rural and Maritime Development, Disaster Management, Anasa Vocea, said people do not have to worry about floods and cyclones damaging the water pipes.

“The government aims to achieve the sustainable development goal, which is to provide clean water to people,” Mr Vocea said.

“We are handing over this project to you so that you look after it, including whatever maintenance is needed to be done.”
