We Will Not Suspend Our Services: Sawana

The Tavua Town Council’s chief executive officer says that services provided by the council will not be suspended for those who have not paid their town rate arrears.

That’s the assurance given by the Tavua Town Council’s chief executive officer, Sailosi Sawana.

“The Tavua Town Council will not suspend any services provided to the ratepayers, like street cleaning, grass cutting, drainage clearing, garbage collection, beautification,” Mr Sawana said.

“These are vital services provided to the ratepayers, business communities and the public. Even though the Council is not collecting any fees on garbage collection, the services also remain a priority to the Council.”

He confirmed that the total number of town rate arrears was $26,859.59.

“It is a difficult time for a small town like Tavua, with its limited resources. The council is managing well with other revenues that we are collecting and in addition the prudent management of its finances,” he said.

Mr Sawana said payment plans were offered for those rate payers struggling to pay their outstanding rates.

“The ratepayers are allowed seven per cent discount, if rates are fully paid by February. This was taken advantage by many ratepayers. Other plans, which are available, are part payment arrangements for example to pay in instalments and directly deposit into our bank account,” he said.

“Those struggling with payments, they can approach the council for payment arrangement, however the ratepayers should ensure to honour their undertakings.”

Tavua resident Avinesh Kumar said he was okay with the current payment plan offered by the council.

“We just paid $136 for the first six months and we were told they will review the next six months as their next financial year will end in the middle of the year,” he said.
