Two women and a child lost their lives in two separate fatal accidents in Viti Levu over the weekend.
The first accident occurred on Friday evening along the Kings Highway near Vitogo, Lautoka.
The victim, 40-year-old Makereta Koroitubuna, a mother of one, was travelling in a vehicle at the time.
Her sister, Paulini Koroi, said family members are struggling to come to terms with the tragic loss.
“I can’t believe you’re gone too soon, my sister,” Ms Koroi said.
“I still cannot digest that I won’t be able to ever talk to you again, never hear your ‘toot’, see that beautiful smile of yours. Rest in love, my beautiful sister. I will miss you so much. Love you, Margie.”
They are from Nalawa, Ra.
Police spokesperson Corporal Wame Bautolu said: “The vehicle driven by a 27-year-old man, while overtaking bumped a truck coming from the opposite lane, causing it to veer-off the road.
The victim sustained serious injuries, which caused her death. The second fatal accident occurred along the Queens Road at Navola, Korolevu, along the Coral Coast last Saturday afternoon.
The victim, Shanaya Shanvi Kumar, 10, of Navo, Nadi, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her father, a carpenter, which veered-off the road and hit a post.
“The victim sustained injuries which allegedly resulted in her death. Her father and three others are admitted at the Sigatoka Hospital,” said Corporal Bautolu.
In the third fatal accident, a woman in her 30s was the victim of an alleged hit and run accident in Suva. The victim was crossing along Stinson Parade when she was bumped by a vehicle, which failed to stop after the accident.
The victim was rushed to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Police are searching for the driver.
The national road death toll currently stands at 52 compared to 42 for the same period last year.
