The Fiji Women Under-19 football side plays Samoa in today’s OFC Women’s U19 Championship semifinal at the HFC Banks Stadium in Suva.

The free flowing game of the Fijians and their ability to keep on trying right to the final whistle has been the hallmark on their success.

Despite losing to New Zealand 3-0 in their group opener, they have managed to fight back to beat Papua New Guinea 2-0 and New Caledonia 1-0.

Now the focus is on head coach Angeline Chua. Who is she?

Yes, she is from Singapore.

Chua has been highly regarded in Seychelles, where she coached their women’s national team for two years.

The Seychelles executive committee member responsible for women’s football, Shella Mohideen, said, “Chua is a stepping stone for future success.”

Chua, a former Singapore international, revitalised women’s football in the country, putting together a team that was able to be competitive in the matches played since she took over.

Under her leadership, Seychelles had its first competitive win last year since 2015, by defeating the Maldives in February 2022. Chua finished her tenure with a record of two wins in eight official games.

According to the Seychelles News Agency, when the side got its FIFA ranking for the first time in 2022, Chua said, “It’s hard to describe. But the team is celebrating this achievement for sure!” Seychelles entered the rankings despite a 6-2 loss to Singapore in a friendly match and is now ranked 165th in the world on the FIFA rankings released in last year December.

Today’s semifinal kicks-off at 3pm.
